Lunar New Year Presentation & Resources for Parents and Teachers! đ
A fun and educational Lunar New Year presentation for young learners, complete with slides, worksheets, and activity ideas!
Happy Lunar New Year, everyone!
Tomorrow, Iâm visiting my daughterâs kindergarten class to give a presentation about Lunar New Year. Since I put a lot of effort into creating my slides, I thought some parents or teachers might find them useful, so Iâm sharing them here!
đ Whatâs Included?
As mentioned in the slides, many countries celebrate Lunar New Year, but my presentation focuses on how Korea celebrates Seollal (ě¤ë ). If youâre more interested in other countriesâ traditions, you can still use the first part of the slides, which explains the difference between the solar and lunar calendars.
I originally made these slides in PowerPoint, since I wasnât planning to share them publicly at first. If I had, I would have used Google Slides from the start! I tried converting them, but the formatting didnât stay the way I wanted. So, Iâm just sharing the PowerPoint link and file instead.
I ran out of time and couldnât include information about the zodiac signs (ë ). If I do this presentation again next year, Iâll be sure to add a section so the kids can find out their zodiac signs, too!
I also created a worksheet where kids can write down both their solar and lunar birthdays. Since my daughterâs class consists of kids born in 2018 and 2019, I only included conversion examples for those years.
đ If you're working with kids of different birth years, you can use this Lunar & Solar Birthday Converter (Google Sheets)
One quick note: Since this was made for my daughterâs class, her name (Ruha) appears in the slides. If youâd like to customize it, you can search for "Ruha" and replace it with your childâs name, or delete it if youâre a teacher using this for your class. (Check slides 15 and 16!)
đ¨ Interactive Activity with Kids
I have one hour for this presentation. During this time, I will spend some time presenting the slides and then transition into a fun hands-on activity with the kids! Weâll be coloring and playing with acorn spinning tops (ëí 댏 í˝ě´).
When I visited Korea, I bought a bunch of them just in case I had an opportunity like this!If youâd like to include a craft or interactive activity in your lesson, I highly recommend checking out the Korean Cultural Center New Yorkâs Lunar New Year Classroom Kit by author Aram Kimâitâs a fantastic resource for young learners! đ
âł A Little Late, but Hopefully Still Helpful!
I had hoped to finish this earlier, but my daughter was really sick and even missed school recently. That set me back a bit, so Iâm only now getting this out.
If youâre presenting tomorrow, this might not be super helpful. However, when my daughterâs teacher reached out, she asked what days Iâd be available this weekâso maybe some of you still have time to prepare!
Hope this helps, and Happy Lunar New Year! đ
A OneDrive Link to download the slides and worksheet (since Substack doesnât allow file uploads).
